26th January is celebrated as Republic Day in India  to honour the day on which the Constitution of India came into force on 26th January,1950.                                                                                                                                             While the national flag is hoisted in each city/village, school/college and so on and march past and cultural dances are performed, the main function is held in the country’s capital New Delhi. The Prime Minister of India lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti (the eternal flame) at India Gate to honour the unknown soldiers  who laid down their lives for the country.                                                                                                               The President of India, who is the  commander-in-chief of the three armed forces, unfurls the national flag. The national anthem is played and 21 gun salute is given. This followed by display of military might by different regiments and parade of traditional and cultural performances by different regions of the country. Performances of school children are looked forward to by the nation. The brave children and heroes of the nation are honoured with national awards.The guests are  showered with rose petals by IAF planes flying past leaving behind a trail of tri-colour.                                                                                                                          The rest of the day is spent in celebrations.                                                                                                    This year the chief guest was Japanese Chief Minister Shinzo Abe.                                                                                                                           The Republic Day celebrations end on the 29th with the Beating RetreatDSCN1951??????????
